Night Shift Ramblings
There have been a few things on my mind lately, so what better way to share them with the world than a 5am blogpost in the middle of a three-night stretch?
I'm annoyed that there isn't a "new house fairy" who comes around and settles you into your new house. How come no one told me it was going to take WEEKS for me to find places to put stuff? How come it doesn't just find it's way to it's new home? I mean dishes are easy enough to put away, but I am my mother's daughter and I have a lot of random crap that needs a home too, ya know? Right now, it's just sitting in the master bedroom waiting to be organized. The other issue is that I have been working all of the days (and by days I mean nights) this month or so it feels, and that's tiring. Spinal fusions are whiney and they make me whiney and also who let's their 15 year old child weigh over 200lbs and then have spine surgery? rude, that's what it is. Which means on the few days I'm not working I'm recovering from working and that looks a lot like sitting on the couch watching NCIS and not at all like being productive. (clearly it's the cable guy's fault that I can't get anything done around here)
Also, let's have a chat about the US Postal Service. I am usually a fan of the USPS, and think I probably use its services more often than the average 25 year old female. I met my new postman the day I moved in and he was delightful and very informative. I ventured to the nearest branch and filled out the proper "paperwork" to get the lock changed on my mailbox. That was July 1st. Today is the 25th and they still have not been changed! They are holding my mail hostage and it's so frustrating! For two weeks they kept telling me that it was going to happen "in the next few days" and then lo and behold, they had to order new locks! Apparently those came in yesterday, so hopefully I'll get my mail sometime this month. When I asked if there was any way to get my mail in the meantime, the lady said "well, you could wait for the mailman to show up and ask him to give it to you" who has time for that?! The one time I did manage to catch the mailman I felt like some crazy hoarder who ordered a thousand things online everyday and assaulted the mailman the second he got there so that she could get her things as quickly as possible. Don't mind me, just trying to empty this jam-packed mailbox over here, sorry if I scared you when I ran up behind you like that.
The reason I'm working so much this month is so that I can take 10 days next month to travel back to Oregon/Washington for #dreamcamp13 with Rolling Hills. Going back to the place I was first a camper with many of the same people who were there with me that first year is going to be pretty, darn amazing. Tres is coming to run sound and all I can think about is how great it's going to be to have so many people I love and enjoy spending time with in one place for a whole week! Also, the oatmeal. Camp food is certainly not the best food, but gosh darn it if that oatmeal isn't the best thing I've ever tasted every morning for a week straight. As if wanting to keep me in check, God's been sending a fair amount of kids to 10N via camp nurse- we had a kid with multiple concussions (who let him back on the go-karts?!) and today a kid with a small bowel obstruction who had to have surgery as soon as he got here. What happened to sunburns and mosquito bites? Homesickness and heartburn? Those I will gladly deal with- dropping an NG tube is not really what I want to be doing on my "days off" ya see, camp isn't really a "vacation" because I don't get any sleep at camp because kids always get sick at the least convenient times- like in the middle of the night and not during the 5 hours of freetime they have each afternoon.
I got an iPhone this week because I was feeling left out of the Nora/Everett face time dates. So far (24 hours in) all I've gotten out of it is a bunch of annoying texts from James and Jon who think it is hilllllarious to text me while I'm trying to sleep between night shifts. Thank God for Do Not Disturb mode, that's all I'm saying. I'm waiting to see how long it's going to take me to break this sucker. I have a tendency to treat my cell phone very poorly, and I just don't see this fancy screen holding up very well to being dropped in the garage parking lot, which seems to happen more frequently than I would like to admit. The battery life on these things is less than impressive though, that's for sure.
I haven't read any books this summer because I have so far spent two days at the pool, one of which was Monday with Liz and I am so burned that I don't even know what to do about it. I've lathered so much aloe onto my skin that I feel like a total slime-ball. Normally it fades after a few days, so far, I'm still looking rather tomatoey. I really just need to grow up and put sunscreen on BEFORE I go lay in the same position for 3 hours.
Was this whole blog post just one giant complaining rant? Sorry, I get a little whiny at 5am. Two more hours. (this new commute is for the birds.)
Next week I get 4 days off in a row, dinner with Elle Dub and Courtney, tennis with Liz and lots of time to sleep, paint and organize. huzzah!
